The Government Wants Your Encrypted Data - Here They Come For It.

In the coming weeks our government is expected to introduce new legislation that will give police, security and intelligence agencies the ability to access the encrypted data of suspected terrorists and others here in Australia.

Cyber Security Minister Angus Taylor is selling this idea that our laws have not kept up with technology. Search warrants will also be updated to require people to give access to their personal online accounts.

How can they ensure the private encrypted messages of individuals not suspected of crimes would be safe? The answer is they cannot, despite what they intend.

This is where most people fail to understand. If there is any backdoor added to the code of messaging apps and social media platforms, to give intelligence agencies access to encrypted data, there is always a risk that others will also exploit that access.

What happens to those of us creating apps that refuse to give access to encrypted data?

I have lots of questions about this legislation. I will see if I can get access to it.
